Last DFI: Revision and EXAM

Image
Last Day and the Exam (or not)  This year during lockdown we have all led ubiquitous learning: available anytime-anywhere-from anyone. The accessibility of rewindable learning has been valuable in my personal life-Nadia Lim cooking show during lockdown- it has been valuable for the children who engaged in this. It meant that whanau could access it at a time when suited the whanau- not necessarily between 9-3. So looking back at 2020 so far in terms of ubiquitous learning.. What am I proud of? Being able to quickly work out how to set up and run a google meet with the whanau. This was cool and from parent feedback Google Meets were what our children really engaged with and looked forward to. The face to face connecting with their friends and teachers.  What do you regret? At the time... nothing as I didn't know what I didn't know.. as far as I was concerned we were a little step further than the school sending out photocopied papers( but if they didn't have access to a devic...

DFI: Computational Thinking

Image
Empowered learners and teachers. Really focussing on concepts when we talk about technology - offering new opportunities and accessibility. Voice, Ownership and Choice of learners was very evident throughout the lockdowns- if it wasn't engaging they didn't bother spending their time doing it. Empowering children leads to empowering whanau with the new opportunities technology provides. Think about online shopping, bill paying, entertainment and information. Evidence from longitudinal studies show that children are entering school in some areas with a mean functioning "age" of 3. Motor coordination, academically, emotionally are all 1/2 a lifetime behind before they even start.  So what can we do to start change? If you intentionally teach young people to have conversations then you can start to backfill their oral language skills which lead to improvement in comprehension and understanding-which has benefits across all aspects of life skills.  In my new entrant teachi...

DFI: Devices

DFI: Devices Being Cybersmart: Fiona Grant "Empowering our learners as connected and confident decision-makers" Think of it as an iceberg: SMART- above the water line is what teachers, school, BOT do and under the waterline  (SECURE) is where learners are-what can they confidently do to keep themselves a safe learner. Trends over the past few years educationalists are talking about being safe and smart -in a positive way. Key messages are around the 'dos' rather than the scaremongering "don'ts". Cyber smart categories and implementation for primary schools. Everything we share online is contributing to our digital footprint. The Manaiakalani Kawa of Care- developed collaboratively with whanau.    What we want for our kids is for them to make an informed decision about what to share: information I want to share and information I want to keep private and if I'm not sure ... what do I do? Providing authentic contexts to share and learn with, and thinki...

Sites: Enabling Access

Image
Making connections with people beyond just who we know. Technology gives us the ability to connect in ways we haven't done before. Not just for learning but for the holistic checking in and well being of people.  We grow from each other in a community willing to share, listen, and help problem-solve. You have to share to be connected-it's a two-way thing. You need all four aspects of the kaupapa for connections to work. SITES   Remember the 3 click rule! sites stuff Looking at other sites- what works well? - from the learners and whanau perspective? Remember the 'window dressing' from last week. Feedback from our 'work in progress site' our next step is to link buttons to slides and to add a reading section.  Will we want photos of the teachers for reading or images about reading?  Need to add recordings of us reading instructions/books. Look at Brogan's slides for her decodable texts- Lisa to create and steal from this idea. (Brogan said yes :) I spent ...

Collaborate Sites

Image
Visible Learning Manaiakalani Kaupapa : Visible.                             Can you see it or can you not? Teaching and learning visible in the home,  making whanau and teachers partners in the learning, and visibility between colleagues. We need to challenge ourselves... what have we hung as teachers that have contributed to failure? We have kept it hidden and secret from whanau and learners. For too long success has gone to those learners that have to 'guess' what is going on in the teacher's mind. What were the responses we guessed/predicted the teachers wanted?  Now we have to think about what parts of our information really need to be kept private? Not the everyday functioning of teaching and learning! Think about lockdown.. the stuff on the classroom walls is useless! Online stuff is useable and accessible.  We need to limit passwords and barriers to make it accessible for all-Think ab...

DFI Dealing With Data

Image
Dealing With Data Sharing and the ability to connect ... as being the hook. Why Blogger?    I It is very useful to teach the digital citizenship skills that all learners need. What to do when you face 'bumps in the road'. Sharing to start new learning. Hapara Hot Tips: You can check the blog comments by clicking on the Blogger icon-you may need to click on the more options down arrow. Google Forms: I have never created one.. lets go! Measurement Questionnaire I can see the use for the class-like pre-post collection of data. Then it would be useful to collate/analyse the data using the tools within the forms.  Googlemap Well I felt so frustrated!!!! Created a cool map then I pressed the delete the layer and all my efforts disappeared. I did say a swear word out loud and almost cried, silly eh but I recognise how learners feel when they get to a roadblock. Take a deep breath and carry on. I can hear the others all saying they are posting their maps on their blogs and ...

DFI Media #3

Image
Media  Create: Using all the body, mind, heart and soul.  Hook: It's all about the HOOK This is what New Zealand was doing historically and was our point of difference- why did we change? Creativity tool of 21st Century is Media: Think about how engaged our children are when working with media. It is multi-sensory- Sight-Sound-Motion Movie tips: Be stable-tripod/ stack of books Lighting- watch the light Phone- film in landscape I-Pad Apps for video Green screen iPad apps- use green carpet as a simple solution-or a green sheet. You Tube Playlists A playlist is a collection of videos. Anybody can make playlists and share them. Google Draw Had a play and then 'added a gadget'. You need to go to the blog home page then select 'layout' then 'add gadget' then scroll down to find the 'image gadget' button. Add image (in downloads) then let load then tick 'shrink to fit' then 'save'. Hopefully it will appear :) Creating a pick-a-path on slide...
