Being Cybersmart: Fiona Grant

"Empowering our learners as connected and confident decision-makers"

Think of it as an iceberg: SMART- above the water line is what teachers, school, BOT do and under the waterline  (SECURE) is where learners are-what can they confidently do to keep themselves a safe learner. Trends over the past few years educationalists are talking about being safe and smart -in a positive way. Key messages are around the 'dos' rather than the scaremongering "don'ts".

Cyber smart categories and implementation for primary schools.

Everything we share online is contributing to our digital footprint.

The Manaiakalani Kawa of Care- developed collaboratively with whanau.

What we want for our kids is for them to make an informed decision about what to share: information I want to share and information I want to keep private and if I'm not sure ... what do I do?

Providing authentic contexts to share and learn with, and thinking about how does the commenting/ connecting make them and others feel?

Hāpara: Lenva Shearing

Dashboard: allows access to all learners-only the class folders created by Hāpara.
Everything else that is not in the drive is found under the 'sharing' tab. (this should be empty if the students are saving in the right place.

iPads: Cheryl Torrie
After research found this was the best device.
Start with the Kawa of Care
iPads need to be signed into each learners email address and need to be in Hāpara so learning is visible. Stylus need to be used.

Teaching how to access apps on iPad so they can access learning themselves.

Explain Everything
We had a play with Explain Everything. This covered what we have done with Mark over the year.
To record your voice use the part where you pick a camera.. there is a microphone there.

I learned how to delete things and save projects onto my drive. When I save them to my drive then need to download it. When I am ready to upload onto my site then I open the download and get the link address so I can put it into a button.

  1. Kia ora Lisa,

What a huge amount of things to take in today. The Smart message really is a key one and so important to help students (and adults) know that they can be smart online, rather than safe. Mark and I are often saying in classes, we can't keep you safe online but we can make sure you are smart and know what to do if you get to an unsafe place. Sometimes we forget that we do this about physical places but not digital.

It sounds like you've had a good explore with a range of things today. I hope the time spent playing with Explain Everything will add value to your classroom.

    Ngā mihi,
    Sharon
